Gulen's niece detained and arrested last month in Turkey #Gulen

Zeynep Gülen, a Turkish woman who is the niece of Turkish cleric Fethullah Gülen, was detained by police late on Thursday night, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

Fethullah Gülen, who lives in the U.S., is accused of masterminding a 2016 coup attempt. He denies any involvement.

Zeynep Gülen, 30,was reportedly driving a car when she was stopped by officers in İstanbul’s Beykoz district.

The police brought her to headquarters after she allegedly presented a fake identity card. Her fingerprints later revealed her true identity.

Turkey launched a large-scale crackdown targeting Gülen followers after the failed coup, conducting mass detentions on an almost daily basis.

Yesterday, Zehra Bozkurt, the daughter of a high-ranking member of the Gülen movement, was detained, along with 16 other followers.

The chief public prosecutors in Ankara and Adana on Friday issued detention warrants for 95 suspects over alleged Gülen links.

At least 70 people were detained in the resulting police operations, the report said, adding that one of the detainees was a cousin of Adil Öksüz, a prime suspect in the 2016 coup attempt.

Following the abortive putsch, more than 150,000 people were removed from state jobs while in excess of 30,000 others were jailed and some 600,000 people have been investigated on allegations of terrorism.

The Higher Court in Bijelo Polje has again ruled to extradite Gulenist movement member Harun Ayvaz to Turkey, where he is wanted for alleged terrorism offences.

The ruling, made on October 14, came after the Podgorica-based Appeal Court overturned the Bijelo Polje court’s previous decision which said that Ayvaz should be extradited to Turkey.

Dalibor Tomovic, a human rights lawyer who is now representing Ayvaz, told BIRN that he will challenge the latest ruling.

“I officially received the case yesterday and we will appeal the decision in the next three days,” Tomovic said.

Tomovic argued that the decision was not in line with Montenegro’s constitution or international law.

“With this decision, the higher court in Bijelo Polje accepted the reasoning of Turkey for extraditing Ayvaz. The reasons include that the Gulen Movement is a terrorist organisation, and having account at Bank Asya is a proof of being a terrorist,” Tomovic explained.

According to his wife, Ayvaz is accused of having a subscription to the Gulen movement’s Zaman newspaper, of using the Bylock application on his phone, which a Turkish court has ruled is a sufficient proof to link a user with the Gulen movement, and of depositing money into an account at Bank Asya – a bank with connections to Gulen.

Tomovic alleged that Montenegro is keeping Ayvaz in custody for political reasons.

“Everyone knows that he is in prison because of political reasons and even the court advised him to apply for asylum but now they are accepting Turkey’s demand for his extradition,” he said.

If the Appeal Court in Podgorica now rules that Ayvaz can be extradited, the Justice Ministry will make the final decision on whether to send him to Turkey or not.

However, Tomovic said that Ayvaz also has a parallel application for asylum, which he submitted on October 24.

“Even if the Appeal Court and the Justice Ministry decide to extradite him, they have to wait to hear the final decision about Ayvaz’s asylum application,” the lawyer explained.

The Turkish government accuses Gulen, who lives in self-imposed exile in the US, of being behind a failed coup attempt in 2016.

After the coup attempt, it started to refer to Gulen’s movement as the ‘Fethullahist Terrorist Organisation’, or FETO for short.

Since then, Ankara has arrested tens of thousands of people, fired hundreds of thousands from public service jobs and closed down thousands of companies, NGOs and educational institutions because of their alleged links with Gulen.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government has strongly urged Balkan states to hand over alleged Gulenists and to close down any institution related to the Muslim cleric’s movement.

Most have resisted the Erdogan government’s call for extraditions, but the Turkish intelligence agency has been involved in two controversial operations to send back Gulenist suspects from Kosovo and Moldova, which sparked political rows in both countries.

Rwanda and Sierra Leone Close Gulen Schools down

The Foreign Ministry of the West African nation of Sierra Leone has agreed to turn over the four FETÖ schools in the country to the Turkey Maarif Foundation (TMV), a body founded to support education and academic activity abroad. TMV Deputy Chairman Ambassador Dr. Hasan Yavuz told Anadolu Agency that Turkey's Accra Ambassador Nesrin Beyazıt and TMV Africa Board Expert İbrahim Baran had been in contact with Ghana and Sierra Leone on the issue of FETÖ schools in the two countries. As a result of the meetings with Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koromo and Foreign Minister Samura Kamara, the country's foreign ministry gave written indication that they would turn over the schools to the TMV. Yavuz reported that President Koroma said, "We will never shelter any element that commits terrorist crimes against the people and state of Turkey. We have canceled all permits for these institutions. It is our desire for TMV to reorganize our country from primary school to university." The TMV schools plan to open their doors in September, Yavuz added. During a previous meeting with top-level administrators and ministers in Ghana, Yavuz said the country had also showed legal documents relating to the FETÖ organization's activities. Sierra Leone is the latest in a string of African countries to agree to Turkey's demands over FETÖ schools. Previously the Republic of Congo, Somalia, Guineau, Niger and Sudan turned over FETÖ schools the TMV, while Burundi, Senegal, Mauritania, Chad, Gabon, Burkina Faso, the Central African Republic, and Madagascar have signed agreements about turning over of FETÖ schools their respective countries. Djibouti and Sao Tome have also signed agreements for the opening of Maarif Schools.

The only Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ)-linked school in Rwanda has shut down, Rwandan Minister of Education Papias Musafiri Malimba confirmed on Friday.

According to Anadolu Agency, Malimba gave the instructions to shut down the school in a written statement. He said that they also decided to take necessary precautions against the school's activities since they take Turkey's desires and the benefits of Rwanda into consideration. Hope Academy was founded in 2012, to provide education to children from high-income families. Last month, Rwandan ministers said that they were ready to provide all types of assistance to Turkey in its fight against FETÖ. "We will not allow any activities to be carried out against the Turkish state in this country," Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo told Anadolu Agency, adding that Rwanda has a clear stance regarding FETÖ and will not allow the group to do business. The foreign minister also said that Rwanda will not let FETÖ supporters, who disregard laws in Turkey, to take shelter in the country. "Rwanda is not a safe haven for people who inflict damage on Turkey, a country we consider a friend," Mushikiwabo said. Rwandan Minister of Commerce and Industry François Kanimba also said that the country is ready to "fully cooperate" with Turkey concerning business activities of FETÖ supporters. "We want to continue to cooperate with Turkey because our relations with Turkey are strategic and significant," the minister said.FETÖ faces heightened scrutiny after being accused of attempting to topple the democratically elected Turkish government in the July 15 coup attempt in which 246 people were killed and 2,200 injured. Rwanda is one of several countries to have taken action following the July 15 coup attempt regarding confiscating FETÖ schools and transferring ownership to the Turkish Maarif Foundation.
