Zambia Government transfers Gulen Horizon Schools to their ownership #GulenSchools

HORIZON SCHOOL - RUMOURS AND TRUTHS
By Dickson Jere,
FOR the past three-days, stories have been trending on Horizon School of Lusaka. Rumors and half-baked truths continue to dominate discussions and yet the government - the custodian of the truth on this issue - remains quiet. Why? I have no idea!
Here is the truth about the Horizon School takeover.
The President of the Republic of Zambia Mr. Edgar Lungu has compulsorily acquired Horizon School in “public interest” using powers vested in him by the Lands Acquisition Act. In order to exercise this power, the President only has to demonstrate that it is in “public interest” to do so - and the owners will eventually be compensated by government as per law. They also have a right to challenge the President in the High Court for Zambia if they think the power has been exercised wrongly.
The next question is what prompted the President to takeover Horizon School. The rumors and innuendos that the land has been acquired in order to facilitate for a shopping mall is not true - at least from what I know. The acquisition has been made following a protracted international battle between the Turkish government and the allies of former Turkish President who is connected to the Fethullah Gulen Organisation. In short, the Turkish government is alleging that the owners of Horizon Schools all over the world are actively involved in terrorism - the accusation which is denied offcourse.
Let’s move to next step.
The Turkish government, through its Maarif Foundation, has opted to takeover all these Horizon Schools all over the world and kick out the alleged “terrorists”. Some governments have signed Bilateral Agreements with the Turkish government to takeover the schools and hand them to the Turkish Maarif Foundation. The government of Chad recently acquired the same schools and handed them over to Turkish government to run them. This is happening in so many countries.
What will happen to Horizon School in Zambia?
What I know is that the Maarif Foundation has asked to be allowed to continue running the school. Whether government will accept this offer or not, it is for the Ministers to explain. But what is true is that the school is not closing and the staff will be maintained either through the Ministry of Education or indeed the Turkish government. Surely government can explain this obvious position!
Will they build the shopping mall?
The answer is NO! There is no shopping mall coming to replace the school. And the school is also not going to close down. That is is what I know talking to government and Turkish officials. So why is government not explaining this simple roadmap to stakeholders? School Board chairman Leslie Mbula is right to speculate in the absence of information!
Lastly, the President is being accused of having personal interest in the matter. On this one, I can defend him. I do not think he has any personal interest given the fact that this an ongoing international battle. This is more of a foreign policy issue of the country. It is an international battle that has sadly entered our jurisdiction and those in power have the responsibility to deal with it - rightly or wrongly!
I hope there will be a detailed statement from government to explain what this debacle is all about. The longer it takes for government to respond, the more the people will believe the rumours. In a digital world, quick response is the best!

Turkey taking over FETO Schools in Africa

Turkey has continued to pile up pressure on countries around the world to shut down or hand over control of schools linked to Fethullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO). The US-based 76-year-old cleric, Fethullah Gulen was accused of masterminding the July 2016 coup attempt in Turkey that left 250 people dead and 2,200 injured. Also, the influential cleric runs FETO and has built a financial empire in Turkey that included banks, media, construction companies and schools. He is reported to have 3 million to 6 million followers in Turkey, including high-ranking government and military officials. The schools began expanding internationally in 1993, and at one point there were Gulen-linked schools, cultural centers or language programs in more than 100 countries. In the United States, it’s the largest group of so-called charter schools, which receive tax funds. It has about 140 schools in 28 states, taking in more than $2.1 billion from taxpayers. In Africa, FETO has a lot of schools and other investments worth billions US dollars. In Nigeria, a document released by the Turkish embassy, listed the indicted schools and institutions as Surat Educational Limited, Abuja; Nigerian-Turkish International School, in Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, Yobe, Ogun and Lagos; and the Nigerian-Turkish Nile University, Abuja. Others, according to the embassy, are The Association of Businessmen and Investors of Nigeria and Turkey/Abinat, Abuja and Lagos; Ufuk Dialogue Foundation, Abuja; Nigerian-Turkish Nizamiye Hospital, Abuja; and Vefa Travel Agency, Abuja.

Recently, President of Turkey, Recep Erdogan, advised parents in Nigeria and other countries in Africa to withdraw their children from Turkish-run schools across the continent because the schools are run by those he described as terrorists. In an exclusive interview with AllAfrica.com prior to his three-country official visit to Sudan, Chad and Tunisia, Mr. Erdogan said the schools are run by an organisation that uses education as a façade to hide their real intent. According to him, the schools are linked to United States based Cleric, Fethullah Gulen, a former ally of Mr Erdogan turn arch-rival. Erdogan said “Without any further ado, I will like to mention something. Whether your nephews, nieces and your children, do not send them to either one of these network schools. “Education is just a disguise for the terrorists working for these organisations, even religion is a disguise for the Fethullahists. In the Quran, Allah condemned those who are using prayers as disguised as they will never be conscientious to the practice of prayer that is why we would remain alert. We would never be manipulated. The coup plotters are the Fethullahists. “They have all been identified and some of them have been sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment. These Fethullahists came to kill me and my family members but Allah protected us and in a matter of minutes we were saved from their bombs, their attacks but two of my security guarded were killed… there are 29 martyrs around the presidential complex which was attacked that night as well. “We are warning all our brothers in Africa not to be deceived because the Fethullahists have great sums of money out of their actions. In 1999, the Chief terrorist, fled to the United States to live in Pennsylvania. We have demanded his extradition immediately. “The Turkish government has established an education foundation to take control of the schools linked with Mr. Gulen. Many African countries, including Nigeria have, however, turned down Mr. Erdogan’s requests to either take control or close schools linked to Mr Gulen. “Soon after the attempted coup, the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Hakan Cakil, called on the Nigerian government to close 17 Turkish schools. His request was however turned down by the government.” However, a Turkish state-run education foundation has taken over control of schools in Chad that once belonged to FETO. Turkey’s Maarif Foundation (TMF) took over the institutions in line with a protocol signed between the Turkish and Chadian governments recently. Among these institutions are a kindergarten, a primary school, two secondary schools, two high schools, and a dormitory. The institutions will continue operating with administrators and teachers sent by Maarif. President Erdogan said in Ankara that Turkey was determined to clear Africa of FETO, saying that FETO fooled people through “sham” education and aid services.

The Maarif Foundation has recently assumed control of numerous schools previously run by FETO around the world, including 32 in Africa, according to Turkey’s National Education Ministry. Also, TMF is working round the clock to be in charge of schools once run by FETO in Nigeria, as it visited the country last year to establish its presence. A member of the Board of Trustees of the Turkish Maarif Foundation and Special Adviser to Turkish Prime Minister, Prof. Cahit Bagci, said that TMF is a not-for-profit public body constitutionally authorized to run schools outside Turkey, adding that their visit was to ensure robust relations on education with Nigeria. Meanwhile, irate President Erdogan said that Turkey would not extradite any suspects to the United States if Washington doesn’t hand over Fethullah Gulen, who allegedly orchestrated a failed 2016 military coup. Ankara accuses U.S.-based Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen of masterminding the putsch and has repeatedly asked Washington for his extradition. But US officials have said courts require sufficient evidence to extradite the elderly cleric, who has denied any involvement in the coup. “We have given the United States 12 terrorists so far, but they have not given us back the one we want. They made up excuses from thin air,” Erdogan told local administrators at a conference in his presidential palace in Ankara. “If you’re not giving him [Gulen] to us, then excuse us, but from now on whenever you ask us for another terrorist, as long as I am in office, you will not get them,” he said. Gulen, 76, lives in rural Pennsylvania. The influential Sunni Muslim cleric fled Turkey for the U.S. in 1999 and was subsequently granted permanent resident status. Turkey is the biggest Muslim majority country in NATO and an important U.S. ally in the Middle East. But Ankara and Washington have been at loggerheads over a wide range of issues in recent months, including a U.S. alliance with Kurdish fighters in Syria and the conviction of a Turkish bank executive in a U.S. sanctions-busting case that included testimony of corruption by senior Turkish officials.

Sudan another Gulen crime lord is nabbed and sent to Turkey, Memdu Cikmaz Mr. 10%

ISTANBUL, Turkey – Turkish intelligence has nabbed one of Turkey’s most-wanted men in connection to last July’s botched coup attempt during an overseas operation in Sudan and flew him to Istanbul on Monday, state-run media reported.
Memduh Cikmaz, considered the primary banker of the Fethullah Gulen movement, was brought to Istanbul in the early hours of Monday morning after a two-month long sting jointly conducted by Turkey’s intelligence agency MIT and Sudan’s National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), Anadolu Agency reported.

Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MİT) has abducted a Gülen movement-affiliated businessman from Sudan, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported on Monday.
According to the news Memduh Çıkmaz was brought to Turkey from Sudan in a joint operation between the two countries’ intelligence agencies. Sudan’s National Intelligence and Security Service is believed to have assisted in his arrest and repatriation, Anadolu reported.
The Aktif Haber news website reported that Çıkmaz had left Turkey in January 2016 after being pressured by the government and settled in Sudan, where he had investments. He was detained in September in Sudan as a result of the growing pressure of Ankara on Khartoum.
Çıkmaz, a native of the central Anatolian city of Çorum, was awarded by then-Turkish President Abdullah Gül for being the leading taxpayer in the city on June 4, 2010.
The Gülen movement is accused by the Turkish government of mounting a coup attempt on July 15, 2016, but the movement strongly denies any involvement.
The government launched a witch-hunt targeting the faith-based Gülen movement following the failed coup. Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu on Nov. 16 said 48,739 people had been jailed and eight holdings and 1,020 companies seized as part of operations against the movement.
The Turkish Justice Ministry announced on July 13 that 50,510 people have been arrested and 169,013 have been the subject of legal proceedings on coup charges since the failed coup in July 2016.
Turkey has suspended or dismissed more than 150,000 judges, teachers, police and civil servants since July 15 of last year through government decrees issued as part of an ongoing state of emergency. (turkishminute.com)

Gulen schools in Mali, Africa to change over to foundation Gulen teachers to leave

Mali Gulen Turkish schools will change ownership and teachers, the country is kicking the CIA gulen members out.

Schools belong to Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ) in Mali were taken over by Turkey's Maarif Foundation in line with an agreement signed between the Malian National Education Ministry and the foundation.
The ceremony that was held in Mali's capital, Bamako, to mark the takeover was attended by both Malian and Turkish officials. The agreement, which envisages transferring the 18 schools linked with FETÖ, was signed by Malian National Education Minister Ag Erlaf and Maarif Foundation board member Hasan Yavuz. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also sent a letter regarding the takeover to Malian President Boubacar Keita.
"We do not let any structure harm our bilateral relations. We completely come to agreement with the Turkish government on FETÖ. Mali stands by Turkey against all kind of terrorism. And we are aware of Turkey likewise standing by us. I will send a special representative in response to my brother President Erdoğan's letter," Boubacar has said.
Some 3,297 students attend the schools, which have 406 teachers, 33 of whom are Turkish. The new academic year begins in October.
Nineteen African countries have handed over FETÖ schools to Turkey's Maarif Foundation or closed them upon Ankara's request.
The Maarif Foundation was established after the July 2016 coup attempt in order to take over the administration of overseas schools linked to FETÖ, which Ankara accuses of being behind the failed coup that left 248 people dead and nearly 2,200 injured.

Morocco, Netherlands and Ethiopia Gulen Schools scheduled to transfer ownership to Turkish Government

MOROCCO CLOSURE
Morocco has ordered the closure of schools it says are linked to  U.S.-based Islamic preacher that Ankara blames for a foilied coup last year, Agence France-Presse has said, citing the Morrocan interior ministry.

“Investigations on the establishments of the Mohamed Al-Fatih group, linked to Turkish national Fethullah Gülen, showed they use education to spread the group’s ideology and ideas contrary to the principles of the Moroccan educational and religious system,” a ministry statement said.

After a series of warnings from the education ministry, “it was decided all the group’s educational establishments would be closed within a delay of one month,” it said.

The statement did not say how many schools or pupils would be affected but said the government would strive to ensure the students continued their education in other schools.

Gülen, who has lived in self-imposed exile in the United States since 1999, is the main suspect in the probe into the July 15, 2016 failed coup case aimed at toppling Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the governmenment.

The preacher heads a network, which Ankara names as the Fethullah Terror Organisation (FETO).

Since the coup attempt, Turkey has piled pressure on the United States to extradite Gülen.

In August, an official Turkish delegation visited Morocco to convince the authorities of the danger of Gülen’s group.

A school director from the Mohamed Al-Fatih group at the time rejected any link with Gülen for seven schools teaching 2,500 students including 2,470 Moroccans.

He said 90 percent of their teachers were also Moroccan nationals.

NETHERLANDS CLOSURE

Seven teachers at De Roos school in Zaandam submitted a letter of resignation to the school's management. De Roos is on a so-called - a list of organizations and individuals said to be affiliated with Fethullah Gulen, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan's rival.
School directer Mustafa Derin confirmed to the Telegraaf that he knows about the resignations, but "can not say anything" about it.
Klaas Hiemstra of school safety organization School en Veiligheid believes tensions in the Turkish community is to blame for the resignations. "Apparently these teachers feel put under pressure and checked whether they are loyal to the Turkish state. They are probably scared, but that is not said openly", he said to the newspaper.
Some 120 of the 4000 Turkish students at De Roos in Zaandam were transferred to other schools because their parents would rather not have them in a Gulen affiliated school, according to the newspaper. The same is happening in other cities. Including Asterdam, Purmerend, Zaandam and Rotterdam, over 200 children were

In Amsterdam there aren't only lists about Gulen organizations in circulations, but also several lists containing the names of school pupils and whether they support Gulen or Erdogan. The Public Prosecutor and police are investigating.

On August 22nd Turkey asked the Netherlands to close all schools believed to be affiliated to cleric Fethullah Gulen in the country, the Dutch government said in a letter to parliament on Monday, Het Parool reports.
This request came 10 days after Turkey sent the Dutch government lists with the names of organizations and companies they believe have ties with Gulen - who seen as the main rival of Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The Turkish government blames Gulen for an attempted military coup in the country in July.
The Netherlands will ignore the lists for the time being, the government wrote, according to the newspaper. “The Netherlands took note of the information handed to us, but will not act on it as long as there is no evidence that these organization were directly involved in the attempted coup. We have no ‘guilt by association’, and so far the Turkish authorities have no evidence of direct involvement of these Dutch organizations in the events of 15 July in Turkey.”
De Witte Tulp is an Amsterdam school on a Gulen-list. So far 170 pupils left the school. Thirteen of them haven’t been registered at a new school yet. A total of 46 pupils left primary school Cosmicus Impuls. And middle school Metis Montessori Lyceum lost 10 students.

Ethiopia has said the transfer of power of schools linked to the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) in the country to Turkish authorities will be through a legal process in ways that do not affect the operations of the schools.
The Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn made the comments in a news conference on Monday.
“The schools were established with the consent of the Turkish government in the first place,” Hailemariam said in response to an Anadolu Agency question as to the position of the Ethiopian government on Gulen-owned schools, which a number of African countries have already shut down.
“Initially it was the government of Turkey that recommended the schools,” he added referring to the six schools in Ethiopia.
“We have children registered in these schools and the legal transfer should be done in a way that does not affect them,” he said.
The prime minister the issue was raised during his meeting with Turkish Economy Minister Nihat Zeybekci, who visited Ethiopia on Dec. 28.
“The Turkish economy minister told me the legal ground was there so the transfer will be made in line with legal grounds,” he said.
According to Turkey’s government, U.S.-based FETO leader Fetullah Gulen masterminded the July 15 defeated coup in Turkey, which left at least 248 people martyred and nearly 2,200 injured.
Ankara has also said FETO is behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police, and judiciary.
In the wake of the coup attempt, tens of thousands FETO suspects have been arrested, including many in the armed forces, police, justice system, and education sector.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced in a press conference held in Ankara on Tuesday that Turkey and Benin have agreed on shutting down three schools linked with the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ) operating in the West African country.
The decision was made during Erdoğan's meeting with his Beninese counterpart Patrice Talon who was paying an official visit to Ankara.
Over the past weeks, similar arrangements against FETÖ-linked schools have also been made by other African countries including Sudan, Somalia, and Guinea.
Turkey signed a protocol Nov. 18 with Chad for the transfer of all FETÖ-linked schools there to Turkey's Maarif Foundation.
FETÖ is the terror group behind the failed July 15 coup attempt in Turkey and a string of crimes including two previous attempts to overthrow democratically-elected governments, money laundering, sham trials and imprisonment of its foes thanks to its infiltrators within the police and judiciary systems.
FETÖ runs a global network of schools from Africa to Central Asia, where it recruits more followers into the group.
During the conference, Erdoğan also said that Turkey gives a lot of importance to its relations with Africa, noting that approximately 4,500 African students from 54 different are currently studying in Turkey.
The President added that five different agreements had been signed between Turkey and Benin.
"All [African] countries matter to Turkey, thus, I think, our ties with Africa should be strengthened much more in order to keep this friendship and solidarity together," Erdoğan said.
Both parties also talked about the Turkish embassy in Benin. Erdoğan said that Talon reminded that the embassy building is currently rented, and suggested to reserve a new building site in a better location. Answering positively to the suggestion of Talon, Erdoğan said that the process could be accelerated with the cooperation of both sides.
Talon said Benin has a lot to learn from Turkey which he said is "a rising power."
On a possible visit to Benin by Erdoğan, Talon said: "It will be a very good news for the whole south of Saharan [countries] and it will indicate the cooperation. Maybe many African countries will feel jealous. Because we, as all African countries, admire Turkey."
Turkey, currently having 39 missions across the African continent, aims at having 54 diplomatic missions in 54 African nations to set up stronger ties with the continent.

Sudan Gulen Schools ordered CLOSED

October 26, 2016 (KHARTOUM) - Sudan’s Foreign Minister, Ibrahim Ghandour on Wednesday said that Khartoum has closed the schools linked to the Turkish opponent Fethullah Gulen in support to the Turkish government.
Turkish government accuses the U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen of being behind the July 15 coup attempt in which at least 246 people were killed. But, the exiled Islamic opponent denies any involvement in the aborted putsch.
Speaking at a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu in Ankara, the visiting Sudanese top diplomat stressed that the security of Turkey is a red line for the Sudan.
“The closure of schools inked to the Turkish opponent Fethullah Gulen was done in support to the Turkish government and people after the July 15 coup attempt,” said Ghandour.
The minister pointed that the Sudanese Ministry of Education is now supervising the two schools and would decide on how to manage them. He noted that a delegation from the Turkish Ministry of Education will visit Khartoum to discuss the matter.
On 4 August, Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir has issued a decision to close all the businesses in the country linked to the Turkish opponent Fethullah Gulen who is accused of orchestrating a failed coup in July.
The decision was announced in a less than a week after a call by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the Sudanese authorities during his address by telephone to a rally organized in Khartoum in support of his government on Sunday 7 August.
At the time, Sudanese Ministry Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Garib Allah Khidir, pointed that the Turkish government had urged to close Gulen-linked schools. He said that his government decided to turn the two schools where over 800 students study into private schools managed by a Sudanese company.
The Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs further announced the expulsion of Gulen-inked persons.
Ghandour expressed his satisfaction with the level of the bilateral relations between Ankara and Khartoum, saying that the two countries could further develop their relations in various sectors.
Ghandour went to say that his country hopes to benefit from the Turkish economic success and experience.
“There are several Turkish investors in Sudan but we look for more,” stressed Ghandour, adding that Sudan and Turkey have formed a joint political advisory committee.
He pointed that the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu will visit Khartoum at the beginning of next year, saying that Turkey has supported Sudan in various international forums.
Last Monday, the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Ghandour will hand a letter from President al-Bashir to the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and will also meet the Turkish Prime Minister Binali Y?ld?r?m.
Following a meeting with the President Erdogan, Sudanese foreign ministry Wednesday said that Erdogan received Ghandour who handed him a letter from al-Bashir.
It further said that the Turkish president accepted an invitation extended by al-Bashir to visit Sudan during the first quarter of the next year but no specific date was agreed.
Sudan and Turkey have strong trade and economic ties. Turkish companies invest over $300 millions. In 2015, the volume of trade between the two countries reached $ 450 million USD Dollars in 2015 (export to Sudan: $424,6 million; import from Sudan: $24,6 million), according the Turkish foreign ministry.                                                             .

Turkish Airlines, Implicated in Arms Trafficking to Nigeria, Asks for Security Checks in Egypt

nsnbc : Turkish Airlines noted that it would have to deploy a security team to inspect Sharm Al-Sheikh Airport in Egypt before resuming flights to the holiday resort in April. Ironically, a Turkish Airline official was caught red-handed in a clandestinely recorded phone call, that revealed the Airline’s and Turkish intelligence circles involvement in arms trafficking to the Boko Haram plagued Nigeria.
Turkey_MIT_THY_NIGERIA_SMUGGLING_WEAPONS_ADTurkish Airlines plans to resume flights to the Egyptian Red Sea resort Sharm Al-Sheikh in April but requests that a security team first would have to inspect security at Sharm Al-Sheikh Airport. Turkish Airlines was one of the many airlines that stopped operations to and from Sharm Al-Sheikh after the fatal crash of the Russian Kogalmavia Airlines (Metrojet) Airbus 321 on Flight KGL9268 in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula on October 31.
Russian investigators, the Russian Defense Ministry and other Russian authorities claimed that the airliner was downed by a bomb on board. The crash resulted in the death of all 224 passengers and crew on board the plane. Egyptian authorities have been reluctant to confirm whether the airliner was downed by a bomb. However, Egyptian President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi, last month, stated that it was likely that the final result of the investigation would reach the same conclusion.
Many of the countries and carriers that suspended flights to Sharm Al-Sheik or Egypt have since resumed operations after Egypt significantly upgraded security at its airports. The tragedy has led to a dramatic drop in the occupancy rate of hotels in Sharm Al-Sheikh and a significant loss of revenue Egypt’s tourism industry in general.
But The Irony – Turkish Airlines Official and Erdogan Adviser Implicated in Arms Trafficking to Nigeria
Ironically, Turkey has since 2011 become one of the region’s main sponsors of terrorist organizations including the Syrian Al-Qaeda franchise Jabhat Al-Nusrah, the Libyan Al-Qaeda franchise the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, as well as Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood linked militants. Not to mention that Syrian oil , stolen by the self-proclaimed Islamic State, is being smuggled via Turkey.
In 2014 a clandestinely recorded phone conversation revealed that a Turkish Airlines official and an adviser to the then Prime Minister, now President R. Tayyip Erdogan were implicated in using the flag carrier to transport weapons to insurgents in Nigeria. The recording was of a conversation (allegedly) between Mustafa Varank, the chief advisor to Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan, and Turkish Airlines (THY) Executive Assistant Mehmet Karakaş. nsnbc has had the recording analyzed by a professional audio and voice recognition expert who noted that the recording appears to be genuine.
Karakaş was asking bluntly whether the weapons are “going to kill Muslims or Christians…,” and references were made to Turkish intelligence service MİT Chief Hakan Bey. (See video above). The leaked recording prompts the question whether or not Egyptian authorities should enforce special security checks of Turkish Airlines flights, passengers and cargo.

Nigeria is the largest oil producer in Africa and has been a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) since 1971. In 2011, Nigeria produced about 2.53 million barrels per day (bbl/d) of total liquids, well below its oil production capacity of over 3 million bbl/d, due to production disruptions that have compromised portions of the country's oil for years.

Gulen School in Adana, Turkey RAIDED by Turkish Government

In yet another government-backed operation targeting the Gülen movement, tax inspectors from the Finance Ministry on Saturday carried out a raid with police at a private school opened by volunteers of the movement in southern province of Adana.
Çukurova Burç College, one of Adana's most successful schools, was raided and searched by four auditors and some 40 police officer early on Saturday over alleged violations of Tax Procedural Law by school administrators. Burç Schools General Manager Sultan Sözeri criticized dozens of police officers' accompanying the inspectors, saying auditors can carry out inspections at the school whenever they want. Sözeri said the raid aims to create a negative image about the school. “I know that parents who see this scene will be more willing to send us their children,” he said.
Stating that the school was inspected by Finance Ministry inspectors just one month ago, Sözeri said the search and the raid are illegal. Sözeri also underlined that the school is known for its successes in Adana. He said top scorers of the province in the most recent Transition to Higher Education examination (YGS), the first-round exam of the university entrance system, were from Çukurova Burç College.
Turkish-Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen and the movement inspired by him have been direct targets of the government and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan ever since a corruption probe in which some senior members of the government were implicated became public on Dec. 17 of 2013. Erdoğan, who refers to Hizmet as the “parallel state” or “structure,” accuses the movement of being behind the corruption operation.

The government, then led by Erdoğan, took action to ensure the closure of schools opened by Gülen's followers in many countries around the world. Gülen-inspired institutions and schools in Turkey are also under intense pressure from the government.
In May of last year, then-prime minister Erdoğan publicly advised supporters of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) not to send their children to schools inspired by Gülen. “We will not even give water to them [members of Gülen movement],” he vowed.
He also ordered officials at AK Party-run municipalities to seize land and buildings belonging to the Gülen movement by any means
