Minister Davutoğlu to be given special award at this year’s Turkish Olympiads
A number of prominent figures including statesmen, academics and journalists will be the recipients of special awards at this year’s International Turkish Olympiads, scheduled to start in late May. |
Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, Interior Minister Beşir Atalay, history professor Lükrü Hanioğlu, Zaman daily columnist Hekimoğlu İsmail and Türk Ocakları Chairman Nuri Gürgür will be recognized at the event for their contributions to Turkish language and culture. This year’s International Turkish Language Olympics, a hugely successful competition now in its eighth year, will start on May 26 in İstanbul. Organized by the International Turkish Education Association (TÜRKÇEDER), this year’s Turkish Olympics will host 650 students from 120 countries including Afghanistan, Argentina, Venezuela, Benin, Ethiopia, Congo, France, Italy, Uganda, Maldives and Sri Lanka. Every year special awards are given at the Olympiads to statesmen, journalists, scholars and businessmen who are thought to have contributed to Turkish language and culture. The Olympiads Organizing Committee, chaired by parliamentary Education Commission head Mehmet Sağlam, has also determined who will be given this year’s special awards. Davutoğlu will be awarded the Karamanoğlu Mehmet Bey Award, Atalay and Hanioğlu will be presented the Ali Şir Nevai Award and Gürgür and İsmail will be awarded the İsmail Gaspıralı Award at this year’s Olympiads. The countdown has begun for this year’s International Turkish Language Olympiads, in which students will compete in 13 categories ranging from poetry to songs. While speaking, writing, grammar, poetry, singing, presentation and specific ability contests will be held under the category of “Turkish as a foreign language,” essay writing, poetry and general knowledge contests will be held under the category of “Turkish as native language.” The opening ceremony of the event will be held at Dolmabahçe Palace in İstanbul on May 26. The award ceremony will be held at the Ankara Arena Sports Hall, newly constructed by the Ankara Municipality, on June 5. |
